How to: Increase and Improve Your Android Dictionary

There aren’t a lot of words that Android doesn’t recognize, especially if you use one of the improved keyboards such as Google Keyboard or Adaptxt Legal Keyboard. But occasionally, I’ll have a moment where autocorrect fails.

However, you don’t have to worry about getting some words wrong, because you can easily improve your Android device’s dictionary in three simple steps.

Boost your language settings

First, you’ll need to open your language settings by going to Settings > Language & input.

Click Personal dictionary.

Next you should see all of the custom words you’ve already added to your personal dictionary.

To add new words, simply click the plus sign (+) in the upper right corner.

If you want to modify a word, simply click on the word to change.

Edit an Individual Word

You can change, delete or add a quick shortcut.

Build a bigger word list

I’m not sure how much you’ll need to modify this feature, but it’s nice to know it’s there.

Unfortunately, your dictionary won’t follow you across devices, so you’ll need to enter the words into each device you own — please fix that Google. If you’re like me, you’ll setup one device (my phone) with all of your common words.

Note too, you can access these same settings from your keyboard since the keyboard ties in with your Android dictionary.
